I use Icedtea (gave up on Java - terrible Linux assistance)
Not sure why it won't work for you, I'm using Debian x64, so...

What problems are you having with the Oracle JRE?
In Debian/*buntu/Linux Mint it's just a PPA.

NOTICE: Realism Texture Pack in Browser now works for users with Java! HOWEVER, it does not work on default settings.
After a conversation with zooty, he stated that deleting a specific folder in the jar will remove the code signing, but then you will have to change your java settings to allow unsigned code.
Java, by default, blocks unsigned code (and so does Icedtea, btw) so you have to change your settings to allow it in order for it to work. Have fun

I could, but it would pretty much only work with Icedtea. Java would block it.
also, I'd have to do it with an up-to-date texture pack. Realism doesn't really fit that category at the moment (but I might start it back up again soon).
