Clicking on an empty space while pickup item is on, while not adding anything visible to your inventory, will cause the max amount of items you can hold go down. Tested this with snow blocks that I had 210 of in my inventory. After I placed them and went to pick them back up after clicking an empty tile for a bit, I could only get 185 back.
