Before anything else, I want to apologise about the abomination of a post that was The 8BitMMO Rant. Rather than presenting my arguments in a more mature manner, I came off as a harsh asshole directly attacking Robby. So I apologise for that. Also, I do know it's 2019 and I'm late to the whole situation.

Now... to the meat of the post. I realised something today, something that lets me understand what Robby has said over the years. Pretty much whenever players were asking for new updates, Robby said that past updates to the game had never led to an increase in player count. The reason is not because of the updates, it's because of the fundamental flaws in the game's design. These fundamental flaws, including many of the game's systems such as building and PvP, as well as the perspective, made it hard for new players to actually get into playing the game. However, by far the biggest issue was the tutorial. The tutorial barely does anything more than teach the players how to move and attack, as well as how the perspective of the game works. Because many of the game's mechanics were poorly explained, a lot of new players were left confused and frustrated about what to do, leading to many negative Steam reviews about the game. This steered more players away from the game, due to the poor ratings and harsh reviews. The lack of updates only helped with the loss of players, especially when it came to veteran players, turning the game into a desolate wasteland with few players that just steers off more new players due to the fact that pretty much nobody else is online.

With these fundamental flaws in 8BitMMO's design, where does the future of the game lie? In Robby? In the community? In a completely different game, made by another developer? Myself and so many others have made such amazing memories and friends over the years playing this game, and it hurts me (and probably many others too) to see it die like this, Robby.

Yes!  Those were the problems exactly.

After Dragon Audit ships, I might start work on another MMO project that's been kicking around in my head for a few years.  If so, it'll hopefully take all the lessons I learned from 8BitMMO, ie:

  • Easy to understand view:  either 2D 100% topdown instead of 4:3 angled 2D isometric, or a true 3D view
  • Building system that isn't just for aesthetic reasons, but has gameplay components
  • Better game support for people who want to RP in game
  • Subscription instead of free-to-play (everyone pays the same price and gets the same features)
  • New client that can run on PC + Console
  • Whole new exciting theme (I'm keeping this part secret for now ;))
  • More flexible object system on server
  • Better tutorial (more interesting, more indepth, more stealthy -- doesn't actually feel like a tutorial)
  • Better physics
  • Better server deployment strategy using some of the new tech that exists these days
  • More interesting metagame for leveling & PvP (also keeping the details of this secret for now)
  • Discord instead of IRC
  • Referral system for youtube/twitch streamers to encourage more playerbase growth
  • More developer made areas
  • Server side script modding...?
  • Also, there is a small chance there might be an importer for existing 8BitMMO built areas to come into the new game.  TBD.

It'll be fairly different than 8BitMMO in a lot of ways, but will still capture a lot of the good parts of 8BitMMO (and be based on the same server engine).

Hi Robby, I'm zone115, a kind-of-sort-of veteran of 8BitMMO. (I lost my old account and the name sucks.)
This sounds great!
I think a fresh start will be much better for the community and the growth of the game. I still agree with one thing TheGreatOnion said, which, was pretty much "having a little philanthropy and helping 7 people rather than hundreds of thousands" but if this is similar to 8BitMMO, maybe it can capture the old veterans and new players too. Kind of like a mixture between the two opinions, which I think is wonderful.

A few problems I see with this: 8BitMMO builds coming into the game wouldn't work because of the topdown nature (builds are meant to be viewed at the diagonal angle that 8BitMMO was at); so, therefore, it would have to be 3D. However; if this would be similar to 9bit's 3D engine, I wouldn't particularly like it. Plus, a fresh start would be nice. (-1 on importing builds.)

Server side scripting sounds great, but how would that even work? Please fill me in on this, lol.

Better physics? Block physics would be nice but I'm not sure how it would work with a topdown angle. I can infer you mean with mobs and players, and this would be cool. Probably moving faster the longer you've been falling, horizontally and vertically (that's how mafia momentum works). (+1 on better physics.) (Not even just blocks, players too. How would you put a physics engine into a topdown world???)

More interesting leveling and PvP? YES, absolutely. (+9001 to better leveling and PvP) (Seriously, leveling in 8BitMMO s u c k e d.)

PC + Console cross compatibility? We'll see how it works. Personally I think PC + Mobile would work a lot better (you can't really chat on console, but mobile controls would be worse).

RobbyZ's guide on HOW TO KILL YOUR OLD (AND PROBABLY NEW) PLAYERBASE: Episode 1:
Make your game sub-to-play. (-9001 to sub-to-play. No, no, no, no, and no.) (This would prevent me and lots of other players from actually playing the game. Would also make me angery.)
I think that players having equal rights is a great idea but money is a problem.
You could try going for a RuneScape bond system with more accessibility to money-making than Runescape. TL;DR non-member people would have a more inflated economy which would balance the non-member/member wealth gap. (Though; of course; this would impact sales. ):)
This takes away total equal rights for players, but allows players to work their way up to membership. Not sure how successful this would be but it would help.
For comparison to RuneScape bonds to my system:
Bonds in RuneScape pretty much give people gold for real money with no hassle; Bonds in this game give people currency, but they can still get that currency with a few days of work. (Tax bond selling? That would probably impact sales a little bit, but still an option)
Bonds in RuneScape take much too long to actually earn; Bonds in this game take probably 5-7+ days of work to get, while providing a cool community. Win-win.
etc. Pretty philanthropic, but might make the game survive longer in the first place.

More flexible object system on server? I have no idea what that means but +1.

Overall very excited for this new game of yours. Maybe when it dies down can we get the engine and source code? Please?
