AlexINF suggested a while ago setting up a Patreon to help fund the server.  Here's some ideas on how that could be implemented:

$5/month reward:

  • Daily Plat:  Each day you login, you can use a Patreon stone.  The stone will check your plat level, and if it's less than 5p, it will increase it to 5p.
  • Extra Plat:  Each consecutive day you login and use the Patreon stone, the daily plat level will be increased by 1, to a maximum of 10p.  Missing a day would reset it back to 5p.
  • This would allow you to buy one or two plat items each day you login.  Unused plat would not accumulate (you can't use the system to have more than 10p at any given time).

$10/month reward:

  • Daily Plat & Extra Plat (see above)
  • 9BitMMO access

That's obviously a ton of value, so there might be some economy effects.  However, given how few people buy plat, I think the number of users who sign up for it would be fairly limited.  This system might only be used by one or two players, but would allow them to replenish plat trading shops.

So I'm curious what people's thoughts are on this system, if the reward tier levels and rewards sound right, and if there's one or two players who would want to sign up for it.  At this point, it's just a rough idea.

This actually sounds like it would be pretty great. I'm not sure how well the 9bitmmo access would go for $10 when it's been $35 as a direct purchase for a while now, and most people who want it would probably buy it from someone else in-game who sells the glasses' boxes. I'd be willing to bet there are at least a few players who wouldn't mind getting that much plat for just $5 a month (assuming it doesn't reset at the end of the week, that's almost 300 plat if they log in daily and use all the plat they get). Honestly, if you were to do this, you'd have to consider either making the $ per month higher, or making the plat packs give considerably more plat.

Something I'd like to suggest is maybe if a player were to use a Patreon stone everyday over the course of a month, on the last day maybe give them a little reward or a bit of extra plat (Not much, maybe like 15 so they could buy public pads and 2k expand blocks, or even 25 so they could expand their town a second time.)

All-in-all, if this ends up happening, I will most certainly throw my support in. Probably only at the $5 level as I already have 9bit access, unless you think of something else to throw in there. As it's said, it can never hurt to try.

It seems like an interesting system, but I feel that given the 10p "limit", it might stop some people from using this in conjunction with ingame plat purchases.

Perhaps if you tracked how much plat the Patreon stone gave each month, so that you simply have a maximum of 10p from the Patreon stone each month. Obviously, this would probably have to stack if such a system was implemented, so maybe if this system was either on a more expensive tier?

Alternatively, you could go in a similar vein to (first that comes to mind) ESO's subscription service in which they give you x amount of plat each month, which does stack. Again, this would have higher value than the current tiers, but it would encourage cross usage of ingame purchases and the Patreon system.

Oh well, I didn't think my idea would be done. Thanks, Robby.

Also, you mispelled "Patreon" in the title.

Well, I think this idea will work better than buying plat, because users need to pay constantly every month, so you will have a constant profit.

Apart from that, it could revive the game if it goes great.

I have two problems with this.

The 1st is that it would make obtaining townstones too easy. We already have a problem with stupid ghost towns and new players placing them and not doing much with them or nothing at all witch is the cause of them. ( for this reason I would suggest a cap of 8 plat max per day. That's a reasonable amount for everything else. While keeping towns limited.

The second problem is that the games simply not getting updates... Your asking us to decide on a system that involves people paying for a game that's essentially a zombie. It's not completely dead and won't die but it's not exactly living or on life support ether...

I'd agree with black jack that there should be something more besides the plat and 9bitmmo for the $10 pack, maybe 5 +250 regionexpands and a 2k expand each week? Or maybe just a random (non-spawner) plat item each day.

Sounds interesting, but you'd need active players for this to work.

I'll tell skrubs who don't know about 8bitmmo about it, but idk....

Imma leave the work of implementing and keeping a crowd to you, but still gonna plug it into life support

Oh, that and if 8bitmmo finally completely dies, pls don't close down #8bit and teh forumz soon afterwards. Use it to spread information about new games/ideas and get responses there. If the game dies, don't kill the community

It's a great idea, but people who are broke like me in real life may not be able to afford these benefits. Perhaps you can change it so that people can gift Patreon Stones. A single use will instead change the daily login bonus from just 50 gold to that and the platinum. In addition. 9bitmmo may also not be the best proposed award as not everyone can run it.

I'm thinking there could be more rewards along the way. Let's brainstorm.

Custom blocks and clothing for high tiers.

Private chats with the developer.

Meet the developer (in person? Maybe way too stalky)

Private Servers? (Probably impossible)

Raffle tickets for donors-only giveaways.

Palette swapping blocks (Separate from custom blocks and clothing because they aren't in the game.. yet)

Increased Gold Farming Maximum.

Exclusive Donor-only purchasable items in-game.

Discounts on certain blocks.

There are other great ideas in the suggestions dump. Perhaps there are a few gems that will amaze you amongst the other... um... stuff.

I'm just rambling on and on but basically, it's a good idea with lots of potential, but the target audience may not be big enough to support the servers.

Ideas for removing useless towns: (Each one is a different one)

1st. When the mayor and vicemayor are all offline for a LONG time (6 months?), the town would convert to an abandoned town.

2nd. Convert to abandoned towns the ones that have less than 500 blocks and the mayor/vicemayor are offline for more than 3 months.

3rd. Mods have the ability to convert any town to a abandoned one.

4th. Players can vote to which towns convert to abandoned ones. Sorta a firm collection for some project. If it haves more than 20 votes, mods can abandone it.

5th. Mayors of the town can directly turn the town to abandoned.

Abandoned towns do the following:

1st. They don't have citizens, mayors or officials.

2nd. The area that they were protecting, now it's wilderness. You can place what you want and remove your blocks.

Idea for removing useless wilderness blocks:

1st. Any person can remove them when the owner is 3 months offline (Like the mods do)

2nd. When they remove it, you get the block. It doesn't belong to the owner now.

The idea of removing old abandoned towns has been brought up and discussed multiple times and has as sim would say become a dead horse that gets beaten every once in a while.

This will never happen. We do not need a bunch of immature people running around removing peoples stuff just because they got into an argument or just don't like the person, secondly TROLLS.

As for you getting the blocks that just gives people even more reason to remove stuff they shouldn't.

I think this is a really good idea, one for the players who can't afford to buy plat and 2, for the new players as they can get the items they want. I ship this.

Part of it is legal stuff ( I think ) the other part is that sim is afraid to do any changes with towns in case of bugs and stuff.

The idea in and of itself is a good concept to build a fundraiser. The use of monthly payment as a means of replenishing plat has the potential to offset the absence of major plat sellers, and I would not be too concerned about market deflation. The reason being it's impossible to overstate the deterioration in the game's economy up to this point. There are practically no sellers for high end plat items such as townstones or publicpads. The result of this was a massive devaluation of gold relative to plat, with a demand well exceeding the supply. Fixing this would require a deliberate devaluation of plat to balance the bimetallic standard, something a pateron system has the potential to fix.

I will further add however that unlike gold, plat has a fixed value tied with true monetary value. It therefore follows that items with a fixed plat value must balance with monetary reform. In layman's terms, this simply means that the value of plat must remain fixed relative to the items charged with plat. If the limit to daily plat was 10 a day, this would cause items such as the 2k expand block (15p) and Publicpad (12p) to appreciate in value while everything below the 10p line depreciate in value because players reach a preordained supply limit. This would increase demand of the high end plat items and create a supply gap between commodities charged above and below 10p. To fix this, I would suggest making a plat supply system based on user activity that could include, but certainly not limited to, hours played in a day or enemies killed as a part of a daily reward program. This ensures that plat is not exploited by simply logging in, and provides an incentive for increased user activity as well. This system would not necessarily be a replacement for the original plan, but something that could possibly work in conjunction with it as an added player bonus.

I would like to furthermore add that these suggestions are presented under the premise that no updates are produced in the foreseeable future, in which case I would agree with Grim that it does not solve a majority of the game's problems. However, my best wishes at this point goes to avoiding the movement from one financial disaster to another.

While this is somewhat of a good idea, (I feel as whoever posted that reply idek) that adding rewards for doing things and being active would be better or even both. However that doesnt' really solve the real problem at all. And that problem is that I've been gone for 6 months and there hasn't been a single update... No new content or anything in like what the past year? Simply keeping this game updated on a regular basis would have a bunch more cash flowing in. About everyone except KJH I feel is getting a bit cautious about spending any money at all on this game due to the fact that all they're getting is currency to a dead game. Even an update every 2 months would help alot. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, this game will have to be shut down unless you update something. There just won't be enough people donating. I for one would be happy to donate if you actually updated. In fact if I ever get a decent job, I would love to become as active as KJH in the donating process but I'm sure as heck not spending it on a game where the only thing keeping it alive is my generosity. .-. Seriously. Updates.

This ensures that plat is not exploited by simply logging in, and provides an incentive for increased user activity as well.

This got me thinking.

I recall quite a while ago, a player (pretty sure it was LegoBox) noticed that rewardblocks would give you 1 skill point when activated, and another player said that skill points were something Sim intended to use for some system, but never got around to it. What if we used those skill points now? Let's say you pay a $5 per month subscription (honestly think it should be higher) for a patreon stone, which can be used to redeem skill points for plat, let's say one skill point = 2 plat, with a limit of 3 redeemable per day. Maybe have killing mobs and hours of playtime give you skill points too, since there is a limit to how many rewardblocks exist.

Now I'm onto something else. What if every month or two there was some kind of contest, like a building contest or PvP tournament or even just some minigame tournament like roll of fate or spleef hosted by Sim (although if it were a minigame, you could have a mod do the actual hosting) and the winner gets some gold (10k-100k, however much you'd deem fair) and some plat or plat items? Probably wouldn't be too hard to set up, just make a blog post, put it on the news feed, and make mods (or some other players that would be willing to help) do all the heavy lifting :P. Shouldn't be too hard (wouldn't even need any programming) and would probably encourage a lot of old players to come back to the game, aswell as give new players something to work forward to. Heck, maybe you could even have tournaments between clans! Guess I'm getting a bit ahead of myself (and off topic :P) but I figured I'd share this here anyhow.

That would be a great idea.

But, I suggest that you could convert the skill points in other stuff, like gold.

For example:

You have 1 skill point available.
Today you can redeem: 3

Redeem for gold (1 Skill Point = 10'000g)
Redeem for plat (1 Skill Point = 2 plat)

The gold option would also be great because it would help when there is a crisis (Imagine, the prices of the plat market go down) like it happened when the townstones were sold for 2'000g.

Clan battles would be good.

There may be a votation before the battles, where they select 3 of the members of the clan and those 3 members fight each one with a different member of another clan, each one at a time.

If this idea is good, I could manage the battles between clans. I can do the rules.

Sorry for the offtopic.

No, they would be for people that don't support Patreon.
