So, when my mind wanders into matters RP, a couple of things bug me:
8 Bit MMO
Eight-bit Massively Multiplayer Online, presumably.
Is this the actual name of the game, and will it always be so?
What is the world called?
What about the universe of all its worlds (in future, when the current map is only one of many)?
What are its PCs called?
Are there adjectival forms for these names?
Do we have to spell them with numerals? 8-817? 1337 15 50 81426!
Thinkin 'bout Names.

Heh
I haven't really developed much of a backstory for 8BitMMO. I have separately written about 70% of a novel that actually fits well as its backstory and I'll probably tie the two together... I should finish that up and release it.
To answer some questions, my current thought is the world is Earth in the future, after an event which causes all sorts of anachronisms. It's a post-apocalyptic society that has been rebuilt, and is filled with city states. The novel goes into detail as to the event itself, the collapse and rebirth of the world.

Flashback at the LHC:
Actually, your story gives me some context for LawyerCats and wandering Hipsters now; it makes sense in a Troma Films kinda way.
"Woo-ho..wait. THAT's not the Higgs boson!
um ... we might have rearranged spacetime slightly.
The string theorists are going to be furious."
